Issue description

The control module is receiving a voltage reading from the engine speed sensor (crankshaft position sensor) that exceeds the expected maximum threshold. This is typically caused by a short circuit to a power source in the wiring harness, a failed internal sensor component, or severe connector contamination.

Check the cause

  1. Perform a visual wiring inspection by tracing the harness from the engine speed sensor back to the main loom, looking for areas where the signal wire may have rubbed and shorted against a 12V power wire.

  2. Check the sensor connector by disconnecting it and inspecting the pins for dust, moisture ingress, or bridging; clean with contact cleaner.

  3. Perform a live data test using diagnostic software (such as Wintest) to monitor the live engine speed sensor signal before condemning the part.

  4. Ensure the sensor gap is correct and the sensor has not been knocked loose, as an improper gap between the sensor and flywheel/crankshaft causes erratic readings.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

    The engine speed sensor on SISU engines is typically mounted on the flywheel housing or the timing cover, where it reads the crankshaft position.

  2. Prep the Area

    Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent accidental shorts. Clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt from falling into the engine block.

  3. Remove the Sensor

    Unplug the electrical connector. Remove the retaining bolt(s) and carefully pull the sensor straight out of its bore.

  4. Clean the Mounting Surface

    Thoroughly clean the mounting face. Any rust or debris left behind will alter the sensor gap, which will cause the new sensor to read incorrectly.

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Insert the replacement sensor, ensuring it sits perfectly flush. Tighten the retaining bolt to OEM torque specs.

  6. Reconnect and Clear

    Plug the electrical connector back in, reconnect the battery, and use a scan tool or the dash interface to clear the 00.03.38 fault code. Start the tractor and verify smooth idle and RPM readout.
