Issue description

The tractor's CAN (Controller Area Network) bus is experiencing a communication failure. Specifically, the expected data messages from the EEM (Engine Electronic Module / Engine ECU) are either missing, corrupted, or timing out before they reach the dashboard.

Check the cause

  1. Verify battery is fully charged and connections are tight, as low voltage or a failing alternator can cause CAN bus modules to drop offline

  2. Check the EEM main power relays and fuses in the fuse box to ensure the Engine Electronic Module is receiving power

  3. Perform a CAN Bus resistance test with the battery disconnected by measuring across CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port (should read approximately 60 ohms)

  4. Inspect the wiring harness running between the EEM and the Dash for chafing, pinch points, or heat damage

  5. Check the multi-pin connectors at both the Dash and the EEM for moisture ingress, corrosion, or bent/pushed-out pins

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before working on the CAN bus or unplugging ECUs.

  2. Clean Connections

    Unplug the connectors at the Dash and the EEM. Spray them with a high-quality electrical contact cleaner and allow them to dry. Apply dielectric grease to the connector seals (not directly on the pins) to prevent moisture ingress.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the continuity test reveals an open circuit or a short to ground on the CAN lines, locate the damaged section of the harness and splice in new twisted-pair CAN wire. Ensure the twists are maintained as close to the repair as possible to prevent electromagnetic interference.

  4. Replace Relays

    If the EEM is not powering up, replace the EEM main power relay.

  5. Clear Codes & Test

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic service tool to clear the inactive codes. Start the tractor to see if the 00.03.49 code returns.

  6. Module Replacement

    If wiring, power, and grounds are all verified as good, the fault lies internally within either the Dash or the EEM. The Dash instrument panel is the most common physical failure point for this specific code, but replacement will require dealer programming to match the tractor's hours and configuration.
