Massey Ferguson 00.1.44 – Dash: CAN BUS Message Issue (Dash)

A communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN bus). The system is detecting missing, corrupted, or out-of-range data packets that are supposed to be sent or received by the dashboard.

   Battery and Charging System Check: Low voltage during cranking or weak charging can trigger false CAN bus codes. Verify the battery is fully charged and the alternator is outputting the correct voltage.

   Inspect the Wiring Harness: Check the wiring harness leading to the instrument cluster for rub points, chafing, or melted insulation. The CAN bus relies on a twisted pair of wires; if these are shorted to ground, shorted to power, or broken, communication will fail.

   Connector Pin Inspection: Disconnect the main plug at the rear of the dash. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals.

   Code Clearing & Verification: Use a diagnostic scanner to clear the code. If the code returns immediately upon turning the key, it is a 'hard fault' (likely a severed wire or dead module). If it returns only occasionally, it is likely an intermittent connection or a failing ground.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts during removal.

   Remove Trim/Guards

   Remove the steering column shroud and any lower dash panels securing the instrument cluster.

   Extract the Dash Module

   Unscrew the mounting hardware holding the instrument cluster in place.

   Disconnect Harnesses

   Carefully unplug the main electrical connectors from the back of the dash.

   Clean and Reassemble

   If installing a new unit, apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the connector seals (not directly on the pins) to prevent future moisture ingress. Plug the connectors into the new dash panel.

   Reinstall

   Secure the dash panel with the mounting screws and reinstall the plastic shrouds.

   Reconnect and Clear

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 00.1.44 fault code. Verify that the dashboard powers up and communicates with the Engine and Transmission modules without throwing new codes.
