Massey Ferguson 00.1.49 – Dash: CAN BUS Message Issue From EEM Engine Module (Dash)

The instrument cluster is expecting periodic status messages from the Electronic Engine Management (EEM) system (the engine ECU), but those messages are missing or corrupted.

   Verify engine state to see if the tractor starts and runs; a no-start could indicate the EEM has lost power or ground.

   Check for accompanying codes like D164 or D149 which point to a broader network crash.

   Inspect harness junctions, specifically the Engine harness-to-Instrument panel harness junction (X60) and the main instrument panel connector (X55).

   Measure CAN resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port with the battery disconnected (should read approximately 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates a broken terminating resistor or wiring segment).

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes during testing.

   Access the Modules

   Remove the steering column/dash cowlings to access the rear of the instrument cluster. Locate the EEM on the engine block.

   Visual Inspection

   Inspect the wiring harness connecting the EEM to the Dash. Look for chafed wires, rodent damage, or areas where the harness rubs against the chassis.

   Clean Connectors

   Disconnect the main Dash connector (X55) and the EEM connectors. Inspect for backed-out pins, moisture, or green corrosion. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and apply a light coat of dielectric grease.

   Continuity Test

   Using a multimeter, test the continuity of the CAN High and CAN Low wires from the EEM connector to the Dash connector. Repair any open circuits or shorts to ground.

   Test and Reassemble

   Reconnect the battery and turn the key to the ON position. If the wiring is intact and the EEM is functioning but the code persists (and the dash gauges remain dead), the CAN transceiver inside the instrument cluster has likely failed, requiring a replacement of the Dash module.
