Issue description

Communication failure on the tractor's Controller Area Network (CAN bus). The system is flagging that expected data packets or signals from the Electronic Engine Module (EEM) are either missing, corrupted, or timing out before they reach the dashboard.

Check the cause

  1. Verify EEM Power and Ground: Check the main fuses, relays, and ground straps supplying the Engine ECU.

  2. CAN Bus Resistance Test: Disconnect the tractor's battery. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms, a terminating resistor is faulty or there is an open circuit. If it reads 0 ohms, the CAN lines are shorted together.

  3. Harness and Connector Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running between the EEM and the cab/dash. Look for chafing, pinch points, or heat damage.

  4. Pin Condition: Disconnect the EEM and Dash connectors. Inspect for pushed-back pins, bent terminals, or green corrosion (verdigris) caused by moisture ingress.

  5. Check for Accompanying Codes: Look for other CAN-related codes (e.g., 00.2.71 or U-codes) which might indicate a broader network failure rather than an isolated EEM-to-Dash issue.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before servicing CAN bus wiring or unplugging modules.

  2. Clean and Reseat Connectors

    If corrosion or loose connections were found during diagnostics, clean the pins with a dedicated electrical contact cleaner. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the connector seals (not directly on the pins) to prevent future moisture ingress, and securely reconnect them.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If a break or short is found in the CAN High or CAN Low wires, cut out the damaged section. Solder in a replacement wire of the same gauge and seal it with marine-grade (adhesive-lined) heat shrink tubing to maintain the integrity of the twisted pair shielding.

  4. Replace Faulty Components

    If the wiring, power, and grounds are all intact but the EEM is still not communicating, the EEM itself may have suffered an internal failure and will need to be replaced or sent out for repair.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

    Reconnect the battery. Use a compatible diagnostic scan tool (such as the AGCO Electronic Diagnostic Tool) to clear the 00.2.49 fault code. Cycle the key and start the tractor to verify the code does not return and that engine data (RPM, temperature, etc.) is displaying correctly on the dash.
