Issue description

The tractor's Controller Area Network (CAN BUS) is experiencing a communication failure. The Dash Module (Instrument Cluster) expects to receive continuous data packets from the Transmission Control Module (TCM)—such as gear selection, transmission fluid temperature, and speed data. When these data packets stop arriving over the CAN network, the Dash logs this fault.

Check the cause

  1. Battery & Charging System Check: Verify the battery is fully charged and the alternator is outputting correct voltage.

  2. Transmission Module Power & Ground: Check all fuses and relays associated with the transmission controller.

  3. CAN BUS Resistance Test: Disconnect the battery. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance between CAN High and CAN Low at the diagnostic port. A healthy CAN network should read approximately 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms, there is an open circuit or a missing terminating resistor.

  4. Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running between the Transmission Module and the Dash Module. Look for chafing, rodent damage, or pinched wires, particularly where the harness routes near the transmission housing or cab mounts.

  5. Connector Pin Check: Disconnect the plugs at both the Dash and the Transmission Module. Inspect for water ingress, corrosion (green pins), or pushed-out pins.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before working on the CAN BUS or unplugging modules.

  2. Clean and Reseat Connectors

    If corrosion is found during the diagnostic checks, clean the pins on both the Dash and Transmission modules using a high-quality electrical contact cleaner. Apply dielectric grease and firmly reseat the connectors.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If a break or short is found in the CAN twisted-pair wiring, cut out the damaged section. Solder and heat-shrink a new twisted pair of wires (maintaining the same twist rate to prevent electromagnetic interference).

  4. Replace Faulty Relays/Fuses

    If the Transmission Module was found to be unpowered, replace the blown fuse or faulty main relay.

  5. Module Replacement (If Necessary)

    If power, ground, and CAN wiring to the Transmission Module are all verified as good, but the module still fails to communicate, the Transmission Module itself has likely failed internally and must be replaced.

  6. Clear Codes and Calibrate

    Reconnect the battery. Use a Massey Ferguson / AGCO diagnostic tool (EDT) to clear the fault codes. If a new Transmission Module was installed, it will require dealer programming and transmission calibration.
