Massey Ferguson 00.X.41 – Dash: Tractor Forward Speed Is Too Fast (Dash)

Issue description

The instrument cluster is receiving a forward speed signal that exceeds the maximum theoretical or plausible speed for the tractor. This is typically caused by a malfunctioning forward speed sensor, a faulty radar speed sensor (if equipped), or a short in the sensor wiring harness sending erratic high-frequency signals to the controller.

Check the cause

  1. Connect the Wintest diagnostics tool and navigate to the speed sensor tab

  2. Compare the theoretical speed (transmission sensor) and actual speed (radar) in the DOT MATRIX hidden menu to isolate which sensor is reading erratically

  3. Inspect the 2-pin connector at the sensor (Pin 1 is the signal, Pin 2 is earth) for chafed wires shorting to ground or power

  4. Test the sensor using a multimeter to check its resistance (OHM) value when stationary (typically around 540 Ohms for the transmission speed sensor)

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Sensor

    Based on the Wintest/DOT MATRIX comparison, determine if the fault lies with the transmission forward speed sensor or the radar speed sensor.

  2. Clean and Inspect

    Disconnect the faulty sensor. Clean the harness connector with electrical contact cleaner and verify there is no moisture or corrosion inside the plug.

  3. Replace the Sensor

    If the wiring is intact but the sensor failed the multimeter resistance test, unthread the old inductive speed sensor from the transmission housing (or unbolt the radar unit from the chassis).

  4. Install New Sensor

    Thread the new sensor in. (Note: Inductive sensors often require a specific air gap; ensure it is seated to the depth specified in the service manual for your exact transmission type).

  5. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the harness, turn the key to the ON position, and use the diagnostic tool to clear the 00.X.41 fault code from the Dash module. Test drive to verify the speedometer reads accurately.
