The Orbitrol unit is a hydrostatic steering control valve mounted on the steering column below the steering wheel. This code indicates an electrical or functional failure with the steering valve/solenoid mounted on this unit, which can result in heavy steering, intermittent steering loss, or complete loss of power steering.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the electrical harness connecting the Dash module to the steering valve on the Orbitrol unit for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins.

  2. Verify that the Dash module is sending the correct output voltage to the steering valve.

  3. Test the steering valve solenoid for continuity and proper resistance using a multimeter.

  4. Check for hydraulic fluid leaks directly below the steering column where the Orbitrol unit is mounted.

  5. Verify that the auxiliary hydraulic pump is delivering adequate pressure to the unit.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Relieve Pressure

    Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the steering system by turning the steering wheel back and forth a few times.

  3. Access the Unit

    Remove the steering column covers and lower dash panels to expose the Orbitrol steering unit.

  4. Disconnect Electricals

    Unplug the electrical harness connector from the steering valve.

  5. Disconnect Hydraulics

    Mark the four hydraulic lines (Pressure, Tank, Left Cylinder, Right Cylinder) to ensure correct reassembly. Disconnect the lines and cap them immediately to prevent system contamination.

  6. Remove the Unit

    Unbolt the Orbitrol unit from the steering column mounting bracket and remove it from the tractor.

  7. Installation

    Mount the new Orbitrol steering valve unit. Reconnect the hydraulic lines to their respective ports and tighten to OEM torque specifications. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  8. Bleed the System

    Reconnect the battery, top off the hydraulic fluid, and start the engine. Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times to bleed air from the hydraulic steering circuit.

  9. Clear Codes

    Use a diagnostic tool or the Dash interface to clear the 00.X.4E fault code and test drive the tractor to confirm smooth steering operation.
