Massey Ferguson 04.0.11 – TRANS: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue
Issue description
This indicates an electrical fault where the transmission controller detects that the current (amperage) being drawn by the reverse clutch solenoid is outside of the expected operating range. This is typically caused by a short circuit (drawing too many amps), an open circuit, or high resistance in the solenoid coil or its wiring harness.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the reverse clutch solenoid on the transmission valve block for rubbed wires, melted insulation, or pinched lines.
Disconnect the solenoid harness and check the pins for corrosion, moisture, or loose terminals. Clean with electrical contact cleaner if necessary.
Perform a resistance (Ohm) test across the pins of the reverse clutch solenoid using a multimeter. Compare to OEM specs; 'OL' (open) or near-zero (shorted) indicates internal failure.
Verify that the transmission controller is sending the correct voltage to the solenoid and that the ground circuit is intact.
Check the transmission fluid level and condition, as contaminated fluid can cause solenoids to overheat and fail electrically.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and ensure the transmission is depressurized.
Locate the Solenoid
Access the transmission valve block on the side of the gearbox. Identify the specific solenoid for the reverse clutch (refer to your model's specific hydraulic schematic to ensure you do not remove the forward or range solenoids by mistake).
Removal
Disconnect the electrical wiring harness from the faulty solenoid. Remove the retaining bolts or snap-ring clips holding the solenoid in the valve body.
Extraction
Carefully pull the solenoid straight out of the bore. Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid will leak out.
Installation
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean Massey Ferguson transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve body and secure it with the retaining bolts or clips.
Reconnection
Reattach the electrical wiring harness.
Fluid Top-Off
Check the transmission fluid level and top off if necessary.
Calibration
Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool. It is highly recommended to perform a transmission/clutch calibration procedure after replacing transmission control components to ensure smooth shuttle engagement.
