Massey Ferguson 04.0.13 – Transmission Module: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Open Circuit
Issue description
The transmission controller continuously monitors the current draw from the reverse clutch solenoid circuit. If the current draw falls below a specific threshold, the controller detects that the circuit is open, shorted to ground, or has lost its power supply. This prevents the transmission from properly engaging the reverse directional clutch.

Check the cause
Ensure the tractor cannot move while performing tests. Lower all equipment to the ground, place all shift levers in neutral, and block the front and rear wheels.
Check if the reverse clutch solenoid is actually being energized by the CCM/Transmission controller when the shuttle lever is moved to the reverse position.
Inspect the wiring harness from the transmission controller to the reverse clutch solenoid. Look for broken wires, rubbed-through insulation causing a short to ground, or corroded/loose pins at the solenoid connector.
Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the reverse clutch solenoid coil. An infinite reading (OL) confirms the solenoid coil has failed internally (open circuit).
Repair steps
Secure the Machine
Park on a level surface, turn off the engine, and block the wheels.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the transmission control valve block (usually on the side of the transmission housing). Identify the reverse clutch solenoid (refer to your specific model's hydraulic/transmission diagram to distinguish it from the forward or range solenoids).
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or damaged connector, repair the harness using OEM-approved waterproof splices or replace the pigtail connector.
Replace the Solenoid (If Applicable)
If the solenoid coil is internally open, disconnect the electrical connector. Unbolt or unscrew the faulty solenoid valve from the transmission valve block.
Install New Solenoid
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Install the new solenoid and torque to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical harness.
Clear Codes & Calibrate
Turn the key on and clear the fault codes from the TRANS module. Start the engine, bring it to operating temperature, and perform a Transmission Clutch Calibration procedure (often requiring the engine speed to be set to 1200 RPM while following the dash display prompts) to ensure smooth engagement of the new reverse clutch solenoid.
