Massey Ferguson 04.0.2C – Transmission Module (TRANS): Gear Lever Clutch Button Signal Received For Over 10 Seconds

Issue description

This code indicates that the control unit is receiving a continuous, uninterrupted signal from the clutch control button (located on the gear shift lever) for more than 10 seconds. This typically means the button is physically stuck in the depressed position, the internal switch contacts have failed in the closed position, or there is a short circuit in the wiring harness.

Check the cause

  1. Physical Inspection: Check the gear lever clutch button for physical damage, dirt, or sticky residue that might be holding the button down. Press and release it to see if it springs back freely.

  2. Switch Continuity Test: Disconnect the electrical connector at the base of the gear shift knob. Using a multimeter, test the continuity across the switch pins. You should only see continuity when the button is actively pressed. If there is continuity when the button is released, the switch/knob assembly has failed internally.

  3. Wiring Harness Check: If the switch tests fine, inspect the wiring harness running down the shift lever and into the console. Look for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or a short-to-voltage that could be sending a false continuous signal to the Transmission Module.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and engage the parking brake.

  2. Carefully disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector located at the base of the gear shift knob or just inside the shift boot.

  3. Remove the faulty gear shift knob from the lever.

(Note: Depending on the specific tractor series, the knob may be threaded, secured with a set screw/pin, or use a press-fit mounting system).

  4. Install the new gear shift knob or replacement button assembly onto the lever, ensuring it is seated securely and oriented correctly for the operator.

  5. Reconnect the electrical wiring harness.

  6. Turn the key on, use a diagnostic tool to clear the 04.0.2C fault code from the Transmission Module, and test the clutch button to ensure the transmission engages and disengages properly without the code returning.
