Massey Ferguson 04.0.40 – TRANS: Issue With Speed Sensor Values (TRANS)

This code indicates that the transmission controller is receiving erratic, out-of-range, or missing signals from the transmission speed sensor. When this value is lost or implausible, the transmission may shift roughly, fail to find the correct gear, or default to a limited operation mode.

   Connect the tractor to the Wintest diagnostic software to check the sensor status and range window for open/closed states or RPM values when moving.

   Perform a resistance test on the inductive speed sensor by disconnecting it and measuring across the pins (should read approximately 450 Ohms +/- 20 Ohms when stopped).

   Check the sensor harness for proper voltage with the ignition on (typically 14V when engaged/pressed, 0V when open) using diagnostic harness X899980246204 to verify wiring is not shorted or broken.

   Check that the sensor is properly gapped against the differential ring gear or input shaft gear.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the transmission speed sensor underneath the tractor, threaded into the transmission housing (often above the differential ring gear).

   Removal

   Thoroughly clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt from falling into the transmission. Disconnect the electrical connector and unscrew the sensor. Be prepared to partially drain the transmission fluid if the sensor is located below the fluid line.

   Installation & Air Gap Adjustment

   Apply a small amount of thread sealant (e.g., Loctite 5922) to the threads of the new sensor. Screw the sensor in fully by hand until it gently bottoms out against the internal gear. Unscrew the sensor by exactly ¾ of a turn to set the correct air gap. Hold the sensor in place and tighten the counter-nut to approximately 6 Nm.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the electrical harness and reconnect the battery.

   Use the tractor's diagnostic interface or Wintest software to clear the 04.0.40 fault code and perform any required transmission calibration routines.
