Massey Ferguson 04.0.90 – TRANS: Issue With Speed Sensor Values (TRANS)
Issue description
The transmission control module is receiving erratic, missing, or out-of-range signals from the transmission input shaft speed sensor. The electronic transmission relies on accurate speed data from this sensor to manage smooth shifting and precision controls; when it fails, you may experience rough shifting, an inability to find the right gear, or an erratic speedometer.

Check the cause
Verify Symptoms: Check if the tractor is exhibiting rough shifting, failing to engage the correct gear, or showing erratic speedometer readings.
Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission speed sensor for chafing, breaks, or corrosion.
Check for Debris: Ensure the sensor mounting area is not heavily caked in mud or debris that could be interfering with the connection or the sensor's magnetic field.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Always disconnect the battery before starting work to prevent electrical damage to the transmission module.
Locate the Sensor
The transmission input shaft speed sensor is typically accessible from underneath the tractor, mounted directly into the transmission housing.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the sensor mounting area and the electrical connector before removal to prevent dirt and contaminants from falling into the transmission.
Remove the Sensor
Unplug the electrical connector and unscrew the faulty sensor from the housing.
Install the New Sensor
Thread the new direct-replacement sensor into the transmission housing (many use an M20x1.5 thread).
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back in and reconnect the tractor's battery.
Clear Codes
After installation, use a diagnostic tool to clear the 04.0.90 transmission fault code from the system.
