Massey Ferguson 04.0.91 – Transmission Control Module (TCU): Issue With Speed Sensor Values (TRANS / TRANS1)

The transmission control system is receiving erratic, implausible, or missing signals from the transmission speed sensor(s). This can cause the tractor to experience shifting issues, get stuck in a specific range, or enter a limp home mode.

   Connect the tractor to the Wintest diagnostic software. Navigate to the gearbox tab and monitor the live data for the transmission speed sensors while the tractor is running or moving. Look for dropouts in the signal.

   Disconnect the sensor and connect a diagnostic breakout harness (e.g., MF tool X899980246204) between the sensor and the tractor's main harness to check for proper voltage supply to the sensor (usually 8.5V to 14V).

   Test the sensor's resistance. A healthy transmission speed sensor of this type typically reads 540 Ohms (±).

   Inspect the wiring harness for rub points, open circuits, or shorts to ground/power (+12V), which can trigger the same 04.0.91 code.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

   Drain Fluid

   Depending on the exact location of the sensor on your specific transmission housing (input shaft, intermediate, or output), you may need to partially drain the transmission oil to prevent fluid loss when the sensor is removed.

   Removal

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty transmission speed sensor. Unscrew and remove the sensor from the transmission housing.

   Installation

   Clean the mating surface on the transmission. If the new sensor requires it, apply a thread sealant (such as Loctite) to the threads. Thread the new sensor into the housing and tighten to OEM torque specs.

   Reconnection

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the connector clicks into place and is free of dirt or moisture.

   Refill and Clear

   Refill the transmission hydraulic fluid to the correct level. Use the diagnostic tool or the tractor's onboard dash sequence to clear the 04.0.91 fault code.

   Test Drive

   Operate the tractor through all transmission ranges to ensure the speed sensor is reading correctly and the code does not return.
