Massey Ferguson 04.0.A2 – Transmission Module (TRANS): CAN BUS Message Missing (TRANS)

Communication failure on the Tractor Data Bus (TDB) where expected data packets from or to the transmission control system are missing, corrupted, or not being received by the network. This is typically caused by a physical wiring issue, a failed module, or a voltage irregularity disrupting the CAN network.

   Check battery voltage stability. Low voltage during cranking or weak grounds can cause multiple modules to drop CAN messages.

   Inspect the transmission wiring harness for chafing, vibration damage, or pinched wires, which are the primary causes of CAN bus errors in heavy equipment.

   Use a multimeter or oscilloscope to probe the CAN High and CAN Low lines. Check for shorts to ground, shorts to 12V positive, or open circuits.

   Verify that the connectors at the transmission controller and the armrest controller are fully seated and that the pins have not lost tension or suffered moisture corrosion.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during harness manipulation.

   Isolate the Fault

   Disconnect the CAN bus connectors at the Transmission Controller.

   Test Continuity

   Perform a continuity test on the CAN lines from the transmission module back to the main Tractor Data Bus (TDB) and the armrest controller.

   Repair Wiring

   If an open circuit or short is found, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness or replace the specific CAN bus diagnostic harness segment.

   Clean and Reconnect

   If the wiring tests good, clean the connector pins with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and firmly reconnect the transmission controller.

   Clear and Retest

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool.

   Module Replacement

   If the code immediately returns and the harness/power/ground are 100% verified, the Transmission Controller (Autotronic module) has suffered an internal failure and must be replaced and reprogrammed by a dealer.
