04.0.C0

Massey Ferguson 04.0.C0 – TRANS: Shuttle Lever Neutral Position Signal Error

Issue description

The transmission controller is not receiving a valid or expected "Neutral" signal from the forward/reverse power shuttle lever on the steering column. This usually happens when the internal electrical contacts in the lever wear out, the lever develops excessive mechanical play (preventing it from fully resting in the neutral detent), or there is a wiring/communication issue between the lever and the transmission controller.

Applies to these machines

  • 4707
  • 4708
  • 4709
  • 4710
  • T4 (2015-2021)
  • 5425–5465
  • 5608–5613
  • 5710SL–5713SL
  • 6445–6499
  • 6612–6616
  • 7465–7499
  • 7614–7626
  • 7714–7726

Check the cause

  1. Check the shuttle lever for excessive mechanical play or 'slop'. If the lever feels loose or lacks a crisp detent, worn internal bushings or mechanism may be preventing the neutral switch from engaging.

  2. Remove the steering column covers and inspect the wiring harness leading to the shuttle lever switch for chafed wires, loose connector pins, or corrosion.

  3. Using a multimeter, test the continuity and voltage of the shuttle lever potentiometer/switch in the Forward, Neutral, and Reverse positions to verify if the neutral circuit is open or shorted.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery terminal.

  2. Access the Switch

Remove the plastic cowling/covers surrounding the steering column to expose the base of the power shuttle lever.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector from the shuttle lever assembly.

  4. Remove the Lever

Unbolt the shuttle lever assembly from its mounting point on the steering column.

  5. Inspect and Replace

If the issue is just a worn pivot bushing, replace the bushing. If the internal electrical contacts are failing (most common for this code), replace the entire Power Shuttle Lever assembly.

  6. Reinstall

Mount the new shuttle lever, plug in the electrical connector, and ensure the wiring is routed safely away from pinch points.

  7. Reassemble and Clear Codes

Reinstall the steering column covers, reconnect the battery, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 04.0.C0 fault code.

  8. Calibration

On many Dyna-4, Dyna-6, and Dyna-VT transmissions, replacing the shuttle lever or transmission components may require running a quick shuttle/clutch calibration procedure via the tractor's dash menu so the controller can relearn the exact voltage parameters for Forward, Neutral, and Reverse.
