Massey Ferguson 04.00.0E – Transmission Module (TRANS1): Forward Clutch Solenoid Low Amps (TRANS1)
Issue description
The transmission control module is detecting an abnormally low electrical current (amperage draw) from the forward clutch solenoid circuit. A low amp draw typically points to an open circuit, high resistance in the wiring harness, a corroded connector, or a failing solenoid coil that can no longer draw the required current to actuate the forward clutch.

Check the cause
Check System Voltage: Verify battery voltage is at least 12.6V. Low system voltage or a weak alternator can cause low amperage readings across the transmission solenoids.
Inspect Grounds and Terminals: Check the battery terminals and chassis earth straps for white/green corrosion. Corrosion creates resistance, which drops the voltage and current reaching the transmission module.
Wiring Harness Inspection: Trace the wiring from the TRANS1 module to the forward clutch solenoid. Look for chafed wires, broken lines, or loose/corroded pins inside the electrical connector.
Ohm Test the Solenoid: Disconnect the forward clutch solenoid and use a multimeter set to Ohms to measure the resistance across the solenoid coil pins. A healthy Massey Ferguson transmission solenoid typically reads around 7.5 Ohms. If the reading is infinite or significantly out of spec, the internal coil is broken and the solenoid must be replaced.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the transmission control valve block (usually on the side of the transmission housing). Identify the forward clutch solenoid (refer to a service manual diagram if necessary, as the forward and reverse solenoids are often mounted next to each other).
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the forward clutch solenoid.
Removal
Remove the retaining bolt or snap-ring securing the solenoid to the valve block. Carefully pull the solenoid cartridge out of the bore. Note: Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of hydraulic transmission fluid will drain out.
Installation
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Slide the new solenoid into the valve block bore until fully seated.
Secure
Reinstall the retaining bolt/clip and torque to OEM specifications.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back into the solenoid and reconnect the battery.
Clear and Test
Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 04.00.0E fault code from the TRANS1 module. Start the tractor and shift from neutral to forward to verify the clutch engages smoothly without triggering the code.
