Issue description

The transmission controller continuously measures the current (amp) draw from the reverse clutch solenoid circuit. This fault code is triggered when the current draw falls outside the expected parameters (typically lower than the limit). This indicates that the circuit is either open, shorted to ground, or has lost its power supply, preventing the reverse clutch from engaging properly.

Check the cause

  1. Check the Wiring Harness: Inspect the wiring from the Transmission Control Module (CCM/TRANS1) to the reverse clutch solenoid. Look for rubbed wires, breaks, or melted insulation that could cause an open circuit or a short to ground.

  2. Test Voltage and Ground: Using a multimeter, verify that the reverse clutch solenoid is receiving the correct voltage (usually 12V) when the reverse shuttle/pedal is engaged. Check the ground circuit for the solenoid to ensure it has a solid connection.

  3. Test Solenoid Resistance/Amp Draw: Measure the internal resistance of the reverse clutch solenoid coil. If the coil is open (infinite resistance) or shorted, the solenoid itself has failed and must be replaced.

  4. Check Connectors: Unplug the solenoid and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

    Disconnect the tractor's battery to cut the power supply. Vent the pressure in the hydraulic system by following the service manual's hydraulic bleed procedure.

  2. Locate the Solenoid Block

    Locate the transmission solenoid valve block. On Dyna-transmissions, the range change and directional solenoids are typically located in a bank on the side of the transmission housing.

  3. Remove the Faulty Solenoid

    Clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the transmission. Disconnect the electrical plug from the reverse clutch solenoid. Unbolt and carefully remove the solenoid valve from the transmission block.

  4. Install the New Solenoid

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block, torque the retaining bolts to factory specifications, and reconnect the electrical harness.

  5. Warm Up the Tractor

    Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and allow it to warm up. The transmission oil temperature must be between 35°C (95°F) and 45°C (113°F) for calibration. You can engage the PTO to help warm the transmission oil faster.

  6. Perform Transmission Calibration

    Access the Dash Control Center (Diagnostic Screen 1) to verify fluid temperatures. Once at operating temperature, run the transmission calibration sequence (Dyna-4/Dyna-6 calibration) so the TRANS1 module can relearn the clutch fill times and amp draw for the new solenoid.
