Massey Ferguson 04.00.10 – TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Voltage Issue (TRANS1)
Issue description
The transmission controller continuously monitors the electrical circuit of the reverse clutch solenoid. This code is triggered when the controller detects an abnormal voltage condition or an improper current draw. This typically means the circuit is experiencing an open circuit, a short to ground, a short to a +12V power supply, or a loss of power supply entirely.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running from the TRANS1 module to the reverse clutch solenoid on the transmission valve block. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or loose connections.
Connector Check: Disconnect the reverse clutch solenoid and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals.
Circuit Testing: Using a multimeter, test the wiring for continuity from the module to the solenoid. Check for a short to ground or a short to +12 Volts.
Solenoid Resistance Test: Measure the resistance (Ohms) across the solenoid coil pins. If the resistance is out of specification (or shows an open/shorted coil), the solenoid itself has failed internally.
Operational Test: Verify if the reverse clutch solenoid receives power (is energized) when the reverse gear is commanded.
Repair steps
Preparation
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical damage.
Access the Valve Block
Locate the transmission control valve block where the directional clutch solenoids are housed.
Harness Repair
If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring issue, repair the broken wire or replace the damaged connector pigtail.
Solenoid Replacement
Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty reverse clutch solenoid. Remove the retaining nut or bolt securing the solenoid coil to the valve stem. Slide the old solenoid off the valve cartridge. (If the cartridge itself is sticking, you may need to unthread the entire valve assembly and replace it). Install the new OEM solenoid and secure the retaining hardware.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery.
Calibration & Clearing
Start the tractor. Use a diagnostic tool or the onboard display to clear the 04.00.10 fault code. Depending on the model, a transmission clutch calibration procedure may need to be performed so the TRANS1 module can relearn the engagement characteristics of the new solenoid.
Test Drive
Shift between forward and reverse to ensure smooth engagement and verify the code does not return.
