Massey Ferguson 04.00.11 – TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue (TRANS1)

Issue description

The transmission controller continuously measures the electrical current (amp draw) from the reverse clutch solenoid circuit. If the current draw falls outside the expected limit (typically lower than the threshold), it indicates that the circuit is either open, shorted to ground, or has lost its power supply. This prevents the transmission from properly engaging or modulating the reverse directional clutch.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect wiring and connectors: Trace the wiring harness from the TRANS1 controller to the reverse clutch solenoid on the transmission housing. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation (short to ground), or disconnected/corroded pins (open circuit).

  2. Perform voltage and energization test: Verify if the reverse clutch solenoid is receiving a 12V power supply when the tractor is commanded into reverse.

  3. Test resistance and amp draw: Measure the resistance of the solenoid coil itself using a multimeter. A healthy transmission control solenoid typically reads around 10 Ohms. An infinite reading indicates an internally open coil, while a reading near 0 indicates an internal short.

  4. Check hydraulic fluid: Check the transmission/hydraulic fluid level and condition. Contaminated fluid can cause the valve spool to stick, leading to coil overheating and subsequent electrical failure.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, relieve all hydraulic system pressure, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the reverse clutch solenoid valve block on the side of the transmission housing.

  3. Remove the Faulty Solenoid

    Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the solenoid. Unbolt the retaining screws/nut holding the solenoid coil and valve cartridge in place.

  4. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the mounting port on the transmission to ensure no dirt or debris enters the hydraulic circuit.

  5. Install the New Solenoid

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean hydraulic fluid. Insert the valve into the transmission housing and torque the retaining fasteners to OEM specifications.

  6. Reconnect and Test

    Reconnect the electrical harness. Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor, allow hydraulic pressure to build, and test the forward/reverse shuttle operation to ensure smooth engagement and that the 04.00.11 code is cleared.
