Massey Ferguson 04.00.12 – TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue

Issue description

The transmission controller continuously measures the electrical current (amp draw) from the reverse clutch solenoid circuit. If the current draw falls below a specified limit, the controller logs this fault. This condition indicates that the circuit is either open, shorted to ground, or has lost its power supply.

Check the cause

  1. Verify Solenoid Energization: Check if the reverse clutch solenoid is actually receiving power when the shuttle lever is moved to the reverse position.

  2. Voltage & Harness Test: Test the wiring harness between the TRANS1 module and the reverse clutch solenoid. Look for 12V at the solenoid connector when reverse is engaged. Check the harness for open circuits, chafed wires causing a short to ground, or corroded pins.

  3. Solenoid Resistance Test: Measure the internal resistance of the reverse clutch solenoid coil. If the resistance is out of specification (indicating an internal open or short), the solenoid itself is the culprit.

Repair steps

  1. Inspect and Clean Connections

    Disconnect the reverse clutch solenoid and the TRANS1 module connectors. Clean them with electrical contact cleaner and ensure no pins are pushed back or corroded.

  2. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If the harness test revealed a break or short to ground, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness or replace the harness segment.

  3. Replace the Solenoid

    If the wiring is intact but the solenoid failed the resistance/amp draw test, remove the faulty reverse clutch solenoid valve from the transmission valve block and install the replacement.

  4. Clear Codes

    Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 04.00.12 fault code from the TRANS1 module.

  5. Perform Transmission Calibration

    After replacing transmission solenoids, a calibration is required. Warm up the transmission fluid to operating temperature. Access the dash screen and configure the PowerShuttle progressivity settings (forward engagement, reverse engagement, and ratio shifting sensitivity) to "0". Run the automated clutch calibration procedure to ensure smooth engagement.
