Massey Ferguson 04.00.13 – TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Open Circuit
Issue description
The transmission controller monitors the electrical current draw from the reverse clutch solenoid circuit. If the current draw falls below a programmed minimum threshold, the controller logs this code. This indicates that the circuit is physically open (broken wire or disconnected plug), shorted to ground, or has lost its power supply entirely.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the reverse clutch solenoid on the transmission control valve block, wiring harness, and connector plug for obvious signs of damage, corrosion, or disconnection.
Verify if the reverse clutch solenoid is being energized when the reverse shuttle/mode is selected by checking for 12V power at the harness connector.
Using a multimeter, check the wiring harness for continuity between the TRANS1 controller pins and the solenoid connector to rule out a broken wire.
Measure the internal resistance of the reverse clutch solenoid coil. If the multimeter reads infinite resistance (OL), the internal coil is broken (open circuit) and the solenoid must be replaced.
Repair steps
Preparation
Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.
Access the Solenoid
Clean the area around the transmission valve block thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.
Removal
Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty reverse clutch solenoid. Remove the retaining bolt or snap ring holding the solenoid in the valve block.
Extraction
Carefully pull the solenoid cartridge out of the transmission housing. Have a drip pan ready to catch any residual hydraulic oil.
Installation
Lubricate the O-rings on the new OEM solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and secure it with the retaining hardware.
Reconnection
Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the plug clicks securely into place. Reconnect the battery.
Calibration
Start the tractor and clear the stored fault codes. Depending on the transmission type (e.g., Dyna-4 / Dyna-6), you may need to perform a clutch calibration procedure via the dash display or diagnostic tool to ensure smooth engagement.
