Massey Ferguson 04.00.16 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): Transmission Module Low Supply Voltage (TRANS)

Issue description

The transmission control unit is receiving an electrical supply voltage that is below the required operating threshold, or its internal voltage regulators (which step down power to 5V or 8V for internal processing) are failing.

Check the cause

  1. Battery Test: Check the battery voltage using a multimeter. A fully charged battery should read around 12.6V resting. Low system voltage will trigger this code.

  2. Alternator Output: Verify the alternator regulator output while the engine is running to ensure it is properly charging the system (typically around 14V).

  3. Wiring and Grounds: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission controller. Look for blown fuses, damaged wires, or corroded power and ground pins at the connector.

  4. Service Tool Monitoring: If you have access to the Massey Ferguson diagnostic service tool, open the MONITOR window and select "TRANS BATTERY VOLTAGE" to see exactly what voltage the controller thinks it is receiving.

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Power Supply Issues

If the battery is weak or the alternator is failing, replace them. Clear the codes and test the tractor.

  2. Repair Harness

If you find a voltage drop between the battery and the controller connector, repair the damaged wiring or clean the corroded ground connections.

  3. Replace the Controller

If the battery, alternator, and wiring are all supplying the correct voltage levels to the module's pins, but the code persists, the controller has suffered an internal failure (e.g., the internal 5V regulator is out of range). You must replace the transmission controller.

  4. Programming

Note that installing a new Autotronic transmission controller usually requires an OEM Autotronic conversion programming kit or dealer software to calibrate the module to your specific tractor's transmission and clutch.
