Massey Ferguson 04.00.31 – TRANS: Transmission Hydrostatic Speed/Direction Sensor Issue

Issue description

The controller is receiving an erratic, missing, or out-of-range signal from the sensor responsible for monitoring the speed and rotational direction of the hydrostatic drive unit within the transmission.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the sensor's wiring harness and connector for physical damage, corrosion, or moisture intrusion

  2. Check for continuity between the sensor connector and the TRANS module, verifying there are no short circuits to ground or power

  3. Ensure the transmission fluid is at the correct level and the transmission filter is not blocked

  4. Look for accompanying codes such as 04.00.42 or 04.00.40 to rule out a broader transmission failure

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Locate the Sensor

Locate the hydrostatic speed/direction sensor on the transmission housing (typically near the hydrostatic unit or input shaft).

  3. Removal

Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor. Remove the mounting bolt securing the sensor to the transmission housing, then carefully pull the old sensor out.

  4. Cleaning

Clean the mounting port on the transmission to ensure no dirt or debris falls inside during installation.

  5. Installation

Insert the new sensor. Ensure the O-ring/seal is properly seated and lubricated to prevent oil leaks. Install and tighten the mounting bolt.

  6. Reconnection

Reconnect the electrical harness. Ensure the connection is clean and the weather seal is fully seated to prevent future moisture intrusion.

  7. Calibration

Clear the fault codes from the TRANS module. Depending on the exact tractor model and transmission (e.g., ML260), you may need to perform a transmission calibration or forward speed display reset using the tractor's display console or a dealer diagnostic tool.
