Check the cause

  1. Inspect the sensor wiring harness and connector for frayed wires, melted insulation, or loose pins

  2. Disconnect the sensor and check for moisture or debris inside the connector. Clean with electrical contact cleaner

  3. Verify the sensor is seated properly to ensure the correct sensor gap between the sensor tip and the reading wheel

  4. Hook up a diagnostic scan tool to monitor the live RPM signal output from the sensor to the control module while cranking or running the engine

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

Locate the transmission mounted engine speed sensor, which typically mounts on the flywheel housing or the transmission input shaft cover.

  2. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the mounting area and connector before removal to prevent dirt or debris from falling into the transmission/flywheel housing.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove

Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor in place and carefully pull the sensor out of the housing.

  5. Install

Insert the new direct-replacement sensor. Ensure it is seated flush so that the sensor gap is correct for proper operation. Secure the retaining bolt.

  6. Reconnect

Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring it clicks and locks into place.

  7. Clear Codes

Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 04.00.44 fault code and verify the proper RPM signal is restored during a test run.
