Massey Ferguson 04.00.49 – TRANS: Transmission Filter Blockage Sensor Issue
Issue description
The control module is receiving an abnormal signal (or no signal) from the transmission filter blockage sensor (X20). This condition can be triggered by a genuinely clogged transmission/hydraulic suction filter restricting fluid flow, cold and highly viscous hydraulic oil causing a false pressure differential, a failed sensor switch, or a wiring fault (such as a short or open circuit) in the sensor's harness.

Check the cause
Verify if the error only appears when the tractor is first started and the transmission oil is cold (cold, thick oil can trigger a false blockage alarm). Allow the tractor to reach operating temperature to see if the code clears.
Check the service hours on the transmission/hydraulic filters. If overdue for a change (typically every 1,200 hours), they may be genuinely blocked.
Locate the X20 transmission filter blockage sensor (right-hand side of gearbox) and inspect the wiring harness and connector for corrosion, loose pins, or broken wires.
Test the sensor switch for continuity using a multimeter to determine if the switch has failed internally.
Repair steps
Park and secure tractor
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
Locate sensor
Locate the transmission filter blockage sensor (X20) on the transmission housing.
Inspect and clean connector
Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor. Clean the connector with electrical contact cleaner and inspect for damage.
Replace sensor if faulty
If the sensor is deemed faulty, unscrew the old sensor and install a new OEM replacement sensor. Reconnect the wiring harness.
Prepare for filter replacement
If the filter is suspected to be blocked (or is due for service), place a drain pan under the transmission filter housing.
Remove old filter
Remove the transmission/hydraulic suction filter housing and extract the old filter element.
Install new filter
Install a new genuine Massey Ferguson transmission filter, ensuring all O-rings and seals are properly seated and lubricated with clean hydraulic fluid.
Top up fluid
Top up the transmission/hydraulic fluid to the correct level using the specified Massey Ferguson transmission fluid.
Verify repair
Start the tractor, allow it to reach operating temperature, and verify that fault code 04.00.49 has cleared and there are no fluid leaks.
