Massey Ferguson 04.00.50 – TRANS: Transmission Filter Blocked (TRANS)

The transmission filter blockage sensor has detected a restriction in fluid flow through the transmission/hydraulic oil filter. When the filter becomes clogged with dirt, debris, or degraded friction material, the hydraulic pump has to work harder to force oil through, which can cause a pressure drop and activate the filter bypass valve.

   Check Fluid Level and Condition: Verify that the transmission/hydraulic fluid is at the correct level and check its condition. Burnt or heavily contaminated oil requires a full fluid flush, not just a filter change.

   Listen for Noises: Check for whining, rumbling, or growling noises from the transmission or hydraulic pump, which can indicate fluid starvation or worn bearings/gears.

   Check for Sluggish Hydraulics: Observe if the tractor has difficulty shifting gears when warm or if the hydraulic response is sluggish.

   Inspect for Brake Wear: A common cause of premature transmission filter blockage in agricultural tractors is worn internal brakes. If the brake linings wear out, the friction material sheds directly into the transmission fluid and clogs the filter.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, lower any attached implements to the ground, turn off the engine, and allow the transmission fluid to cool.

   Locate the Filter

   Locate the external high-pressure transmission oil filter (often a spin-on style filter located on the side of the transmission housing).

   Drain/Catch Fluid

   Place a drain pan underneath the filter housing to catch any hydraulic fluid that escapes during removal.

   Remove the Filter

   Unscrew and remove the blocked transmission filter.

   Inspect the Old Filter

   Cut open or inspect the old filter. If you find heavy metal shavings or excessive fibrous material (brake linings), the tractor will require a deeper internal transmission or brake repair.

   Install the New Filter

   Lubricate the rubber sealing ring on the new OEM transmission filter with clean hydraulic/transmission oil. Thread the new filter on and tighten it according to the manufacturer's specifications (usually hand-tight plus a quarter turn).

   Top Up Fluid

   Check the transmission fluid dipstick/sight glass and top up the hydraulic oil to the correct level to replace any fluid lost during the filter change.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Start the tractor, check the filter area for leaks, and use a diagnostic tool or the tractor's dashboard interface to clear the 04.00.50 fault code. Test drive to ensure the warning light does not return.
