Massey Ferguson 04.00.54 – TRANS2: Transmission Temperature Signal Out Of Range
Issue description
The transmission controller is receiving a voltage signal from the transmission temperature sensor that falls outside the expected operating parameters (typically indicating an open circuit, a short to ground, or a completely failed sensor) rather than just an overheating event.

Check the cause
Locate the transmission temperature sensor/switch at the bottom of the transmission casing.
Inspect the wiring pigtail and the main harness leading to the TRANS2 module for chafed wires, melted insulation, or breaks.
Disconnect the sensor and inspect the connector pins for water ingress, corrosion, or bent terminals.
Use a multimeter to check the resistance across the sensor pins. An open reading (infinite resistance) or a dead short confirms a failed internal thermistor.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Allow the transmission fluid to cool.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the area around the transmission temperature sensor on the bottom of the transmission casing to prevent dirt from entering the sump.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.
Remove Sensor
Place a clean catch pan directly underneath the sensor to catch hydraulic/transmission fluid. Quickly unscrew and remove the faulty sensor.
Install New Sensor
Thread the new OEM temperature sensor into the casing. Tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque (do not overtighten, as these are often brass or hollow-bodied sensors).
Reconnect & Top Up
Reconnect the electrical harness. Check the transmission fluid level via the dipstick/sight glass and top up any fluid lost during the swap.
Clear Codes
Turn the key to the ON position and use your diagnostic tool to clear the 04.00.54 code from the TRANS2 module. Test drive to ensure the code does not return.
