Massey Ferguson 04.00.56 – TRANS (Transmission Control Module): Transmission Filter Blockage Sensor Issue (TRANS)

Issue description

This fault code indicates a signal error or malfunction related to the transmission filter blockage switch (sensor X20). The code specifically flags an issue or signal error with the sensor itself, rather than just a blocked filter.

Check the cause

  1. Check fluid temperature — cold, thick hydraulic oil can sometimes trigger false filter blockage warnings. Ensure the fault persists at normal operating temperature.

  2. Inspect fluid and filter condition — check the transmission/hydraulic fluid level and condition, as a severely clogged filter can cause erratic sensor readings.

  3. Check for contamination — if the filter is genuinely blocked, inspect the filter element and oil for metal filings or fibrous debris (a common early warning sign of internal brake disc breakup).

  4. Inspect sensor wiring — locate the filter blockage sensor (X20) on the right-hand side of the gearbox/transmission housing. Check the wiring harness and connector for breaks, corrosion, or loose connections.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare machine

Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.

  2. Locate sensor

Locate the transmission filter blockage sensor (X20) on the right side of the transmission housing.

  3. Clean area

Thoroughly clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  4. Disconnect wiring

Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.

  5. Remove faulty sensor

Unscrew the faulty sensor from the filter housing/block. Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of hydraulic fluid may leak out.

  6. Install new sensor

Install the new OEM sensor and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  7. Reconnect wiring

    Reconnect the electrical wiring harness.

  8. Replace filter and fluid

If you haven't already, it is highly recommended to replace the transmission oil filter and top off the hydraulic/transmission fluid with the correct AGCO specification fluid.

  9. Verify repair

Start the tractor, allow the oil to warm up, and verify that the fault code has cleared and no leaks are present.
