Massey Ferguson 04.00.62 – TRANS1: Issue With High Speed Range Solenoid / Issue With Range 2 Solenoid Valve (TRANS1)

Issue description

The system has detected an electrical fault in the circuit for the Range 2 solenoid valve (component designation L53), specifically an open circuit, a short circuit to +12V, or a short circuit to ground (0V).

Check the cause

  1. Locate the transmission control valve block (typically on the right-hand side of the gearbox) and visually inspect the wiring harness running from the Autotronic 5 controller to the L53 solenoid for chafing, breaks, or melted insulation.

  2. Disconnect the L53 solenoid connector and check for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins.

  3. Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the L53 solenoid coil and compare it against the other range solenoids (L52, L54, L55) to check for internal failure (open or shorted).

  4. Check the Range 2 position switch (L57) to ensure it is not physically damaged or stuck, as a mismatch can trigger related range errors.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare machine

Safely park the tractor on level ground, turn off the engine, and relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.

  2. Locate valve block

Locate the transmission control valve block on the right-hand side of the gearbox.

  3. Identify solenoid

Identify the Range 2 solenoid valve (L53). It is grouped in a row with the Range 1 (L52), Range 3 (L54), and Range 4 (L55) solenoids.

  4. Disconnect harness

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the L53 solenoid.

  5. Remove hardware

Remove the retaining screws and the flange holding the solenoid valve in place.

  6. Remove solenoid

Carefully pull the L53 solenoid valve out of the transmission housing.

  7. Lubricate O-rings

Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission oil.

  8. Install new solenoid

Insert the new solenoid valve, refit the flange, and tighten the retaining screws.

  9. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness.

  10. Clear fault codes

Clear the fault codes using the tractor's diagnostic interface or Wintest software.

  11. Calibrate transmission

After replacing a transmission solenoid valve, perform a transmission/clutch calibration procedure to ensure smooth shifting.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Range 2 Solenoid Valve (Component Designation: L53 / EV2)

Specific part numbers vary heavily by exact transmission serial number. Ensure you specify whether the tractor has a Dyna-4 or Dyna-6 transmission.
