04.00.84

Massey Ferguson 04.00.84 – TRANS: Issue With Message From Speed Lever On Armrest (TRANS)

Issue description

The transmission controller is not receiving the expected data (often via the CAN bus network) from the forward-travel/speed lever (sometimes referred to as component X106 or the Multipad joystick) located on the operator's armrest.

Applies to these machines

  • 7714
  • 7715
  • 7715S
  • 7716
  • 7716S
  • 7718
  • 7718S
  • 7719
  • 7720
  • 7720S
  • 7722
  • 7722S
  • 7724
  • 7724S
  • 7726
  • 7726S
  • Tier 4 (2015-2021)
  • 7700 Series
  • 7700S Series

Check the cause

  1. Check the wiring harness and connectors between the armrest speed lever and the transmission controller for rubbed wires, pinched harnesses in the armrest pivot points, or loose/corroded pins.

  2. Verify the CAN bus communication integrity to the armrest module.

  3. Connect the Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool and attempt to perform the 'Calibration of the forward travel lever on the armrest' to see if the lever has simply lost its calibration parameters.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Armrest Internals

Carefully remove the trim panels on the control armrest to expose the speed lever/joystick wiring.

  3. Resolve Wiring Faults

If any wiring damage or connector corrosion was found during the diagnostic phase, repair the harness or replace the damaged connector pins.

  4. Replace the Lever (if necessary)

If the wiring is intact, the CAN network is healthy, and the lever fails calibration (indicating an internal hardware failure), unbolt the faulty speed lever/joystick assembly and disconnect its main harness. Install the new OEM joystick and secure the mounting hardware.

  5. Reassemble and Calibrate

Reinstall the armrest trim and reconnect the battery. You must use the dealer diagnostic tool to run the 'Calibration of the forward travel lever on the armrest' procedure so the TRANS module recognizes the new component's parameters.

  6. Test

Clear the 04.00.84 fault code and test the tractor's forward/reverse and speed functions to ensure the code does not return.
