Massey Ferguson 04.00.97 – TRANS1 (Autotronic 5): Issue With Range 3 Engaged Switch And Range Solenoid 3

Inconsistency or signal mismatch between the Range 3 solenoid valve (L54) and the Range 3 position sensor/engaged switch (L58). The transmission controller is detecting that the commanded state of the solenoid does not match the mechanical feedback from the switch.

   Verify connectors for the 4 range solenoid valves and 4 range position sensors are plugged into their correct respective ports (swapped connectors are a common cause after maintenance)

   Inspect the wiring harness between the Autotronic 5 controller and the transmission side cover for open circuits or short circuits to +12V or 0V on the Range 3 solenoid (L54) and Range 3 position sensor (L58) circuits

   Test the Range 3 solenoid coil for proper resistance to check for an open coil or internal short

   Test the Range 3 engaged switch for proper continuity and signal change when the range is mechanically actuated

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to protect the Autotronic 5 controller.

   Locate Components

   Locate the transmission range valve block on the side of the gearbox where the solenoids and position switches are mounted.

   Clean and Inspect

   Clean the area around the Range 3 solenoid and switch to prevent debris from entering the transmission. Disconnect the electrical plugs and inspect the pins for corrosion or pushed-out terminals. Repair as necessary.

   Replace Faulty Component

   If the solenoid is faulty: Remove the retaining nut/fastener holding the solenoid coil, slide the old coil off the valve stem, and install the new solenoid. If the switch is faulty: Unthread the Range 3 position sensor/switch from the transmission housing, install the new switch, and tighten to OEM torque specifications.

   Reassemble and Calibrate

   Reconnect the electrical plugs (ensuring they are not cross-connected). Reconnect the battery.

   Clear Codes

   Use a diagnostic tool or the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu to clear the 04.00.97 fault code.

   Test

   Start the tractor and perform a transmission calibration procedure to ensure smooth shifting and verify that the Autotronic 5 controller recognizes the new components.
