Massey Ferguson 04.00.98 – TRANS1: Issue With Range 4 Engaged Switch And Range Solenoid 4 (TRANS1)

The transmission controller is detecting a malfunction, mismatch, open circuit, or short circuit (+12 V or 0 V) involving the Range 4 position sensor/switch and the Range 4 solenoid valve. The system expects the switch state to match the commanded state of the solenoid; when it doesn't, or if the electrical current to the solenoid is out of bounds, this code is triggered.

   Verify that the wiring connectors for the 4 transmission solenoid valves and the 4 range position sensors are plugged into the correct corresponding ports (crossed connectors are a known cause of this fault).

   Test the wiring harness to the Range 4 solenoid valve for an open circuit or a short circuit to +12V or ground (0V).

   Test the resistance of the Range 4 solenoid valve itself (a healthy OEM transmission solenoid typically measures around 10 Ohms).

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

   Locate the Valve Block

   Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the transmission housing where the range solenoids and switches are mounted.

   Inspect Wiring

   Carefully inspect the wiring harness leading to the Range 4 solenoid and the Range 4 engaged switch. Look for rubbed-through insulation, broken wires, or corroded connector pins. Repair any harness damage found.

   Replace the Solenoid/Switch

   If the wiring is intact but the solenoid fails the resistance test (or the switch fails continuity testing when manually actuated), remove the retaining hardware holding the faulty Range 4 solenoid valve or switch in place.

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Insert it into the valve block and secure it with the retaining hardware.
