Massey Ferguson 04.00.9D – TRANS2: Transmission Input Shaft Speed Sensor Calibration Fault

Issue description

The transmission control system has detected missing, incomplete, or out-of-range calibration values for the transmission input shaft speed sensor. The tractor's computer relies on this calibrated data to manage smooth shifting and precision controls.

Check the cause

  1. Check the wiring harness and connector at the input shaft speed sensor for corrosion, damage, or loose pins

  2. Check the sensor gap and inspect the tone ring for damage or debris

  3. Ensure the transmission oil temperature is within the strict calibration window of 35°C (95°F) to 45°C (113°F)

Repair steps

  1. Position the tractor on flat, level ground.

    Phase 1: Transmission Calibration (Dyna-4 / Dyna-6)

  2. Warm up the transmission oil until it is between 35°C and 45°C (viewable on the dash diagnostic screen).

    Tip: Engaging the PTO can help warm the fluid faster.

  3. Activate the PowerShuttle (forward and reverse) 10 times in each direction for 5-10 seconds to warm up the control units and solenoid valves.

  4. Configure the PowerShuttle progressivity settings to '0' on the dash.

  5. Disengage the PTO, place the tractor in neutral, and release the parking brake.

  6. Raise the engine speed to approximately 1500 RPM.

  7. Raise the PowerShuttle arm to the 'raised' position and hold it there while simultaneously pressing the differential lock switch.

    Hold both for about 10 seconds until the right-hand transmission screen displays 'Ct'.

  8. Place the PowerShuttle arm into the forward position to begin the calibration.

    The process takes about 10 minutes, during which you will hear the transmission shifting.

  9. Once complete, the screen will display your current transmission ratio (e.g., 1A/2A). Place the PowerShuttle in neutral, disengage the diff lock, idle the tractor down, and turn the engine off to save the settings.

  10. Disconnect the tractor's battery.

    Phase 2: Sensor Replacement (If Calibration Fails)

  11. Locate the input shaft speed sensor (often located near the PTO shaft/transmission housing where access can be tight).

  12. Thoroughly clean the mounting area to prevent dirt from entering the transmission.

  13. Remove the old sensor and install the direct-replacement electronic sensor, ensuring it is seated properly to maintain the correct gap with the tone ring.

  14. Reconnect the battery and repeat the Phase 1 calibration procedure.
