04.00.A5

Massey Ferguson 04.00.A5 – TRANS: Issue With Transmission Actuator Internal Position Sensor (TRANS) / Issue With Transmission Actuator Internal Position Sensor DYNA VT (TRANS)

Issue description

The transmission actuator is responsible for controlling the hydrostatic unit ratio in the continuously variable transmission (CVT). This actuator contains an internal position sensor that provides feedback to the transmission controller. Code 04.00.A5 indicates that the sensor is reporting an implausible signal, an open circuit, or has failed entirely.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Transmission ECU and the Transmission Actuator for damage, corrosion, or loose pins (external wiring faults are a common culprit).

  2. Check for related CAN codes, such as 04.00.B0 (Issue With Transmission Actuator Communication On CAN BUS). If present, the issue is likely a network or wiring failure rather than a failed sensor.

  3. Attempt to run the transmission actuator calibrations via the Datatronic CCD or tractor terminal to see if the sensor can re-learn its end stops.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Fault

If wiring is intact and the calibration fails or the code immediately returns, the internal position sensor has failed.

  2. Replace the Actuator

Because the position sensor is internal to the transmission actuator, the entire actuator unit must be replaced.

  3. Remove the Defective Unit

Disconnect the battery, drain any necessary fluid, disconnect the actuator harness, and unbolt the transmission actuator from the Dyna-VT transmission housing.

  4. Install the New Unit

Mount the new actuator and reconnect the wiring harness.

  5. Perform Mandatory Calibrations

A new actuator will not function correctly out of the box. You must perform a full transmission calibration (all 4 transmission calibrations) using the Datatronic terminal or the dealer diagnostic tool (FENDIAS/EDT) to learn the new actuator's position values.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Transmission Actuator / Transmission Control Unit (Dyna-VT)

Ensure you are ordering the actuator specific to the Dyna-VT transmission. It must be electronically calibrated to the tractor's ECU immediately after installation.
