Massey Ferguson 04.00.E9 – TRANS: Transmission Internal Software Issue

Issue description

This indicates a software or logic fault within the transmission's electronic control system. It typically means the controller has detected an internal memory error (such as a RAM/EEPROM fault), a corrupted software reference curve, or a logic condition it cannot correct.

Check the cause

  1. Check electrical power and ground integrity for low voltage during cranking, weak charging from the alternator, or poor grounds

  2. Verify CAN bus communication to ensure there are no lost messages between the transmission controller (Autotronic) and other modules (like the Dash or DCC2/DCC3)

  3. Use a diagnostic tool to check live data and confirm if the transmission is actually disabled, stuck in a range, or exhibiting intermittent function

  4. Check calibration status to see if the transmission has lost its calibration data due to corrupted reference curves

Repair steps

  1. Clear the Code

Connect the Massey Ferguson EDT (Electronic Diagnostic Tool) or Wintest software and attempt to clear the fault code to see if it was a transient error caused by a voltage drop.

  2. Recalibrate the Transmission

If the code clears but shifting is erratic, perform a full transmission calibration procedure to rewrite the reference curves to the module.

  3. Software Flash/Update

If the code returns immediately or the module indicates a corrupted software reference curve, use the Wintest/EDT software to re-flash or update the Autotronic transmission controller.

  4. Module Replacement

If the diagnostic software cannot communicate with the module, or if the internal memory (RAM/EEPROM) has suffered a hard failure that cannot be overwritten, the Autotronic transmission control unit must be replaced.
