Massey Ferguson 04.00.ED – Transmission Module (TRANS): Clutch Pedal Not Calibrated

Issue description

The control module has lost the calibration values for the clutch pedal position sensor (potentiometer), or the sensor has been replaced/adjusted and a new calibration procedure has not yet been successfully completed. As a result, the tractor may experience harsh or jumpy clutch engagement, delayed direction changes, or a complete lack of shuttle response.

Check the cause

  1. Check for active electrical fault codes related to the clutch pedal sensor (e.g., voltage too high, voltage too low, or open circuit). If the sensor is faulty, calibration will fail.

  2. Verify transmission oil temperature is properly warmed up. Depending on the model, it must be between 35°C (95°F) and 45°C (113°F), or at least 50°C.

  3. Warm up the oil and control units by engaging the PTO or activating the PowerShuttle forward and reverse 10 times for 5-10 seconds each.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Position the tractor on flat ground. Apply the handbrake, disengage the PTO, and place the PowerShuttle lever in the Neutral position.

  2. Set Engine Speed

Raise the engine speed to approximately 1500 RPM.

  3. Initiate Calibration Mode

Raise the PowerShuttle arm (located to the left of the steering wheel) to the raised position and hold it there while simultaneously pressing the differential lock switch.

  4. Wait for Prompt

Hold both for approximately 10 seconds until the right-hand transmission gear screen on the dash displays 'Ct'.

  5. Start Calibration

Once 'Ct' is displayed, place the PowerShuttle arm into the Forward position. The calibration will begin automatically.

  6. Allow Process to Complete

The screen will continuously show 'Ct'. The process takes approximately 10 minutes. It is normal to hear the transmission shifting and making noises during this time.

  7. Completion

Once finished, the screen will display the transmission ratio (e.g., '1A/2A' or '1E/2E').

  8. Save Settings

To save the new calibration, place the PowerShuttle lever back into Neutral, disengage the differential lock, idle the tractor down, and turn the engine off.

  9. Validation

Restart the tractor and test forward/reverse maneuvers to ensure the clutch engagement is smooth and the fault code has cleared.

  10. Alternative Dash Method

Enter the service menu by holding the 'A' button on the dash, use the arrow buttons to navigate to 'Clutch pedal calibration', and follow the on-screen prompts.
