Massey Ferguson 04.00.F1 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS): Transmission Calibration Issue (TRANS)

Issue description

This code indicates that the transmission's electronic control system has detected that the transmission is out of calibration, or a previous calibration attempt was interrupted or failed. It often presents physically as harsh clutch engagement, a 'jerky' reverse shuttle, or delayed direction changes.

Check the cause

  1. Positioning: Ensure the tractor is parked on completely flat ground.

  2. Fluid Temperature: The transmission oil temperature must be between 35°C (95°F) and 45°C (113°F). Verify this via the Dash Control Center on diagnostic screen 1. Warm up the tractor through normal operation and engage the PTO to help heat the transmission fluid.

  3. Component Warm-up: Cycle the PowerShuttle lever (forward and reverse) 10 times in each direction for 5 to 10 seconds to ensure control units and solenoid valves are at operating temperature.

  4. Settings: Configure the PowerShuttle progressivity settings (forward engagement, reverse engagement, and ratio shifting sensitivity) all to '0' on the left-hand dash screen.

  5. Disengagement: Ensure the differential lock and front axle are completely disengaged to prevent interference with the calibration process.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare tractor for calibration

With the tractor on flat ground, disengage the PTO, place the transmission in neutral, and release the parking brake.

  2. Raise engine speed

Raise the engine speed to approximately 1500 RPM (± 100 RPM) using the hand throttle.

  3. Initiate calibration mode

Raise the PowerShuttle arm (located to the left of the steering wheel) to the raised position and hold it there while simultaneously pressing the differential lock switch.

  4. Hold controls

Hold both for approximately 3 to 10 seconds until the right-hand instrument panel (the transmission gear screen) displays 'Ct'.

  5. Begin automated calibration

Once 'Ct' is displayed, the tractor is ready. Place the PowerShuttle arm into the forward position to begin the automated calibration.

  6. Wait for calibration to complete

The calibration will take approximately 10 minutes. The screen will continuously display 'Ct', and it is normal to hear the transmission shifting gears and making noises during this time.

  7. Verify completion

Once complete, the right-hand screen will display the transmission ratio you were in before starting (e.g., '1A/2A' or '1E/2E').

  8. Save settings

To save the settings: Place the PowerShuttle into the neutral position, disengage the differential lock, idle the tractor down, and turn the engine off.

  9. Validate calibration

Restart the tractor and validate the calibration by driving back and forth, testing forward-to-reverse and neutral-to-forward maneuvers to ensure shifting is smooth.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Transmission Input Shaft Speed Sensor

    QTP-64768

Fits 6400, 6600, 6700, 7600, 7700 series. Provides accurate transmission speed data to the computer; if this fails, the transmission cannot calibrate shift timing.

  • Shuttle Position Potentiometer / Inductive Position Sensor

Located on the transmission cover on the right-hand side (especially on electric shuttle models like the 6100 series). Incorrect voltage adjustment or failure of this sensor will cause a complete lack of shuttle response or jerking.

  • Clutch Pedal Position Sensor

Often associated with jumpy clutch engagement on the 4700/5700/6700 series.
