Massey Ferguson 04.00.F2 – Transmission Module (TRANS): Transmission Calibration Issue (TRANS)

Issue description

This code indicates that the transmission (specifically the PowerShuttle, clutches, or Dyna-4/Dyna-6 transmission system) has lost its calibration parameters or requires recalibration. Symptoms of this issue typically include harsh or 'jumpy' clutch engagement, a jerky reverse shuttle, delayed direction changes, or flashing indicator lights.

Check the cause

  1. Verify transmission oil temperature is between 35°C (95°F) and 45°C (113°F) via the Dash Control Center on diagnostic screen 1.

  2. Ensure the differential lock and front axle are disengaged prior to starting calibration.

  3. Check the shuttle position potentiometer voltage on the transmission cover (especially on 6100 series and similar); incorrect adjustment can mimic a calibration failure.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Position the tractor on flat ground.

  2. Warm-Up

Warm up the transmission oil to the required 35°C–45°C window. You can engage the PTO to help speed up the warming process.

  3. Cycle the Shuttle

Before starting the calibration, activate the PowerShuttle lever (forward and reverse) 10 times in each direction for 5 to 10 seconds. This ensures the control units and solenoid valves are brought up to the exact temperature of the transmission.

  4. Zero the Settings

On the left-hand dash screen, configure all PowerShuttle progressivity settings (forward engagement, reverse engagement, and ratio shifting sensitivity) to '0'.

  5. Set the Tractor

Disengage the PTO, place the tractor in neutral, and release the parking brake.

  6. Enter Calibration Mode

Raise the engine speed to approximately 1500 RPM (± 100 RPM). Raise the PowerShuttle arm to the raised position and hold it there while simultaneously pressing the differential lock switch. Hold them for about 3 to 10 seconds until the right-hand transmission gear screen displays 'Ct'.

  7. Run Calibration

Once 'Ct' is displayed, place the PowerShuttle arm into the forward position to begin. The process takes approximately 10 minutes. It is completely normal to hear the transmission shifting and making noises during this time.

  8. Completion

When finished, the screen will stop displaying 'Ct' and will show the transmission ratio you were in before starting (e.g., '1A/2A').

  9. Save Settings

Place the PowerShuttle into the neutral position, disengage the differential lock, idle the tractor down, and turn the engine off to confirm and save the new changes.

  10. Validation

Restart the tractor and test drive it using a variety of maneuvers (forward to reverse, neutral to forward, etc.) to ensure the shifting is now smooth.
