Massey Ferguson 04.01.09 – TRANS1: Forward Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue
Issue description
The transmission control module has detected an abnormal electrical current (amperage draw) on the circuit that controls the forward clutch solenoid. This condition is typically caused by a failing solenoid coil (internal short or high resistance), a damaged wiring harness (short to ground or power), or a corroded electrical connection.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the TRANS1 module to the transmission valve block for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points
Disconnect the forward clutch solenoid and check the pins for moisture, corrosion, or poor pin tension
Perform a coil resistance test using a multimeter across the pins of the forward clutch solenoid and compare to OEM specifications (an open circuit or dead short indicates a failed internal coil)
Perform a swap test by swapping the forward and reverse clutch solenoids; if the fault code changes to the reverse clutch solenoid (04.01.0F), the solenoid is confirmed defective
Repair steps
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the transmission housing.
Thoroughly clean the exterior of the valve block and the area around the forward clutch solenoid with brake cleaner or a degreaser.
This is critical to prevent dirt from contaminating the hydraulic system when the solenoid is removed.
Disconnect the electrical wiring harness from the forward clutch solenoid.
Remove the retaining nut or bolts securing the solenoid coil to the valve stem.
Or remove the entire cartridge valve, depending on the specific Dyna transmission variant.
Remove the faulty solenoid and discard it.
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid and install it into the valve block.
Tighten the retaining fastener to the OEM torque specification.
Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place.
Turn the key on and use the tractor's diagnostic interface or a service tool to clear the fault codes.
Perform a transmission clutch calibration.
Replacing a transmission solenoid changes the hydraulic engagement characteristics; a calibration ensures the TRANS1 module learns the new solenoid's fill times, preventing harsh or jumpy clutch engagement.
