Massey Ferguson 04.01.0F – Transmission Control Module (TRANS1): Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue

Issue description

The transmission controller continuously measures the current draw from the reverse clutch solenoid circuit. If the current draw falls below a specified limit, the controller logs this code. This indicates that the circuit is either open, shorted to ground, or has lost its power supply.

Check the cause

  1. Verify Solenoid Energization: Check if the reverse clutch solenoid is receiving power when the shuttle lever is moved to the reverse position.

  2. Wiring Harness Inspection: Trace the wiring from the TRANS1 module to the reverse clutch solenoid. Look for rubbed-through wires (short to ground), broken wires (open circuit), or corroded/loose connector pins.

  3. Voltage & Current Test: Use a multimeter to test the voltage at the solenoid connector. You should see 12V when the reverse pedal/shuttle is engaged.

  4. Coil Resistance Test: Measure the resistance across the solenoid coil pins. If the resistance is out of specification (or shows an open loop/infinite resistance), the solenoid itself has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Tractor

    Position the tractor on flat ground, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or corroded connector between the TRANS1 module and the solenoid, repair the harness and clear the code.

  3. Replace the Solenoid

    If the wiring is intact but the solenoid fails the resistance/amp draw test, locate the reverse clutch solenoid on the transmission valve block. Disconnect the electrical harness, unbolt/unscrew the faulty solenoid, and install the replacement.

  4. Perform Transmission Calibration

    After replacing transmission solenoids, a clutch calibration (e.g., Dyna-4 / Dyna-6 calibration) is highly recommended to prevent jerky shifting. Note: To successfully run the calibration via the Dash Control Center, the transmission oil temperature must be warmed up to between 35°C (95°F) and 45°C (113°F).
