Massey Ferguson 04.01.13 – TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Open Circuit

Issue description

The transmission controller continuously measures the electrical current draw from the reverse clutch solenoid circuit. If the current draw falls below a specific threshold, the controller determines that the circuit is "open". This means there is a break in the electrical path, which could be caused by a broken wire, a disconnected plug, a loss of power supply, or an internal failure (open coil) within the solenoid itself.

Check the cause

  1. Ensure the tractor is parked on level ground, the engine is off, and the wheels are blocked so the tractor cannot move during testing.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness running from the TRANS1 module to the reverse clutch solenoid on the transmission block for chafed wires, broken lines, or loose/corroded connector pins.

  3. Verify if the reverse clutch solenoid is receiving voltage when commanded by the controller (Power Test).

  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the solenoid and measure the resistance across the solenoid's pins using a multimeter. A healthy OEM solenoid typically measures around 10 Ohms. If it reads infinite resistance (OL), the coil has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Park the tractor safely, place all shift levers in neutral, lower any attached equipment to the ground, and block the front and rear wheels.

  2. Locate the reverse clutch solenoid valve on the transmission hydraulic control block.

  3. Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the solenoid.

  4. If the diagnostic tests revealed a wiring issue, repair the broken wire or replace the damaged connector pin in the harness.

  5. If the solenoid coil tested open, remove the retaining hardware and extract the faulty solenoid valve from the transmission block.

  6. Install the new solenoid valve and secure it in place.

  7. Reconnect the electrical harness to the new solenoid.

  8. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 04.01.13 fault code from the TRANS1 module.

  9. Perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure to ensure smooth engagement of the reverse clutch.
