Massey Ferguson 04.01.14 – TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Low Amps
Issue description
The transmission controller is detecting that the electrical current (amperage) flowing through the reverse clutch solenoid circuit is lower than the expected operational threshold. This condition typically points to an electrical issue such as high resistance in the wiring, a loose or corroded connector, a broken wire, or a failing/open solenoid coil.

Check the cause
Ensure the tractor is parked on level ground, the parking brake is firmly engaged, and the machine cannot move during testing
Inspect the wiring harness running from the TRANS1 module to the transmission valve block for chafed wires, breaks, or signs of heat damage
Disconnect the plug at the reverse clutch solenoid and check for water ingress, dirt, or corroded pins, ensuring the pins fit tightly
Using a multimeter, measure the resistance (Ohms) across the pins of the reverse clutch solenoid to check for an open circuit or out-of-spec resistance indicating internal failure
With the engine off but the key ON, verify if the TRANS1 module is sending voltage to the solenoid connector when the reverse shuttle is commanded
Repair steps
Preparation
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and relieve any residual hydraulic pressure if required by the service manual.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the area around the transmission control valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system when the valve is removed.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the reverse clutch solenoid.
Removal
Remove the retaining nut or bolts holding the solenoid coil/valve assembly in place. Carefully slide the old solenoid off the valve stem (or remove the entire cartridge valve depending on the specific transmission block design).
Installation
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Install the new solenoid and torque the retaining nut/bolts to OEM specifications.
Reconnection
Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring it clicks and locks securely.
Calibration/Testing
Clear the 04.01.14 fault code from the TRANS1 module using a diagnostic tool. Start the tractor and test the forward/reverse power shuttle operation to ensure smooth engagement and that the code does not return.
