Massey Ferguson 04.01.20 – TRANS: Issue With Signal Voltage From Foot Throttle Sensor (TRANS)

The controller is receiving a voltage signal from the foot throttle potentiometer that falls outside the expected operating range (typically below 0.5V or above 4.5V). When this occurs, the system cannot accurately determine the operator's throttle request, often resulting in the machine defaulting to a limited RPM mode, idle, or ignoring the foot pedal entirely.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the foot throttle sensor for chafed wires, micro-cracks, or physical damage near the pedal assembly.

   Disconnect the sensor and check the pins for corrosion, moisture, or poor terminal tension.

   Using a multimeter, verify that the sensor is receiving a steady 5V reference voltage from the ECU/TCU.

   Back-probe the signal wire with a multimeter and perform a signal sweep test. Slowly depress the foot pedal from resting to full throttle. The voltage should smoothly sweep (generally between 0.5V and 4.5V) without erratic jumps or dropouts. If it spikes, drops to 0V, or stays static, the sensor is internally faulty.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and remove the key. Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Sensor

   Locate the foot throttle sensor potentiometer, which is mounted directly to the throttle pedal assembly in the cab.

   Removal

   Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the sensor. Remove the retaining screws/bolts holding the sensor to the pedal bracket.

   Installation

   Mount the new OEM throttle sensor in the exact orientation as the old one. Secure the mounting hardware and plug in the electrical connector.

   Reassembly & Power Up

   Reconnect the battery.

   Calibration & Clearing

   Connect a diagnostic scanner (such as the AGCO Electronic Diagnostic Tool) to the tractor. Clear the 04.01.20 fault code from the Transmission module. You may need to run a throttle pedal calibration routine via the software so the module learns the new minimum and maximum voltage limits of the replacement sensor.
