04.01.24

Massey Ferguson 04.01.24 – Transmission Control Unit (TRANS): Park Lock Switch On Steering Column Direction Lever, Signal Issue

Issue description

The controller is detecting an invalid, missing, or out-of-range electrical signal from the park lock switch located on the steering column's forward/reverse direction lever. This typically disables the automatic park brake function and may restrict the machine to auxiliary/emergency operation modes.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running down the steering column from the direction lever switch to the Transmission Control Unit (TRANS) for chafing, pinches, or exposed wires.

  2. Disconnect the steering column switch connector and check for bent pins, moisture, or corrosion.

  3. Using a multimeter, test the continuity of the signal wire from the switch connector to the TRANS module. Verify that the switch receives the correct reference voltage and that the signal state changes properly when the park lock is physically engaged and disengaged.

  4. Check the transmission/cab fuses and any inline diodes associated with the park lock circuit to ensure they haven't failed.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the Switch

Remove the plastic cowling/covers surrounding the steering column to expose the base of the forward/reverse direction lever.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the multi-pin electrical connector attached to the steering column switch control unit.

  4. Remove the Switch

Remove the retaining screws/bolts holding the switch assembly to the left side of the steering column and slide the unit off.

  5. Install the New Part

Mount the new switch control unit onto the steering column and secure it with the retaining hardware.

  6. Reassemble

Plug in the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place, and reinstall the steering column covers.

  7. Clear Codes & Test

Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position, clear the stored 04.01.24 fault code from the TRANS module, and test the park lock engagement to verify the repair.
