04.01.42

Massey Ferguson 04.01.42 – TRANS: Transmission Hydrostatic Speed/Direction Sensor Issue

Issue description

The controller is receiving an erratic, intermittent, or incorrect signal from the transmission output speed sensor. This sensor feeds critical information to the tractor's computer, enabling smooth transmission operation, accurate ground speed readings, and consistent implement draft control. When this fails, the tractor may experience harsh shifting, shift hesitation, or a loss of auto-shift modes.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the sensor's wiring harness and connector for dust or moisture intrusion, ensuring connections are clean and properly sealed.

  2. Connect a diagnostic service tool to the tractor and navigate to the monitor screen.

  3. Select the parameters for 'inst ground speed - wheel' (MPH/KPH) and 'inst trans output speed' (RPM).

  4. Drive the tractor and monitor the live data to see if the sensor output drops out, spikes erratically, or reads zero while moving.

Repair steps

  1. Locate sensor

Locate the transmission output speed sensor on the transmission housing.

  2. Disconnect connector

Disconnect the electrical connector from the old sensor.

  3. Remove mounting bolt

Remove the mounting bolt securing the sensor to the housing.

  4. Remove sensor

Pull the old sensor out of the transmission port.

  5. Install new sensor

Install the new sensor, ensuring the O-ring/seal is intact to prevent fluid leaks and moisture intrusion.

  6. Reinstall bolt

Reinstall and tighten the mounting bolt.

  7. Reconnect connector

Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks into place and is properly weather-sealed.

  8. Clear fault codes

Clear the fault codes using the diagnostic tool. Some systems may require a transmission/clutch calibration or system reset after the sensor is replaced to restore smooth shifting.
