Massey Ferguson 04.01.48 – TRANS: Transmission Range Has Not Moved To Neutral (TRANS)
Issue description
This code triggers when the transmission control unit commands the transmission to shift into neutral, but the range position sensors fail to detect that the transmission has physically moved into the neutral position. This is typically caused by a failure in the electronic range change mechanism (such as a stuck solenoid, a failed position sensor, or a wiring issue).

Check the cause
Check Fuses: Inspect the transmission control fuses. On Dyna-6 systems, check fuses F4, F18, and F29, which supply power to the transmission solenoids and sensors.
Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Locate the bank of four range solenoids (L52 to L55) and four range position sensors (L56 to L59) on the right side of the transmission housing. Check the harness for rub points, corrosion, or loose connections.
Test Solenoid Resistance: Using a multimeter, measure the resistance of the range solenoid coils. A healthy coil at ambient temperature should read approximately 9.7 Ohms.
Test Position Sensors: Verify that the range position sensors are receiving a 12V supply on Pin 1 and are outputting a valid signal on Pin 2.
Check Transmission Fluid & Temp: Ensure the transmission fluid is at the correct level and that the oil temperature is reading accurately on the dash (calibration requires the oil to be between 35°C and 45°C).
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on level ground, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
Access the Components
Clean the area around the transmission solenoid bank on the right side of the transmission to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.
Remove the Faulty Part
Disconnect the electrical connector from the failed range position sensor or solenoid valve. Remove the retaining bolts and carefully extract the component.
Install the New Part
Lubricate the O-rings on the new sensor/solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert it into the housing and tighten the retaining bolts to OEM torque specifications. Reconnect the wiring harness.
Warm Up the Transmission
Start the tractor and warm the transmission oil to between 35°C (95°F) and 45°C (113°F). You can engage the PTO to help warm the oil faster.
Perform Transmission Calibration
Enter the diagnostic screen on the dash. Move the Power Shuttle lever forward and reverse 10 times (leaving it in each position for 5-10 seconds) to warm up the new solenoids. Initiate the automatic calibration sequence (usually by running the engine at 1500 RPM, engaging the power shuttle and diff lock for 3 seconds, then shifting the shuttle lever to start).
Clear Codes and Test
Clear the 04.01.48 fault code. Test drive the tractor, shifting through all ranges to ensure smooth operation and that the transmission successfully finds neutral.
