Massey Ferguson 04.01.54 – TRANS2: Transmission Temperature Signal Out Of Range

The transmission control module is receiving a voltage signal from the transmission fluid temperature sensor that falls outside the expected operational parameters. This condition is almost always caused by an electrical fault, such as an open circuit (broken wire or unplugged connector), a short circuit to ground/power, or an internally failed temperature sensor.

   Visually inspect the transmission temperature sensor's electrical connector and wiring harness for physical damage, corrosion, or loose pins.

   Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to check the signal wire for continuity back to the TRANS2 controller. Verify that the wires are not shorted to ground or shorted to a voltage supply.

   Measure the resistance across the pins of the temperature sensor. If the multimeter reads an open circuit (infinite resistance) or a dead short, the sensor has failed internally.

   Secure the tractor

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.

   Locate the sensor

   Locate the transmission temperature sensor at the bottom of the transmission casing.

   Clean the area

   Thoroughly clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt or debris from entering the transmission housing during removal.

   Prepare for fluid loss

   Place a clean drain pan directly underneath the sensor to catch any transmission fluid that will escape when the sensor is removed.

   Disconnect the harness

   Disconnect the electrical harness from the sensor.

   Remove the faulty sensor

   Unscrew and remove the faulty sensor.

   Install the new sensor

   Quickly thread the new OEM transmission temperature sensor into the port to minimize fluid loss, and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.

   Reconnect the harness

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the connector clicks securely into place.

   Check fluid level

   Check the transmission fluid level via the sight glass or dipstick and top up with the correct specification hydraulic/transmission fluid if necessary.

    Clear fault code and test

    Turn the tractor's ignition on and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 04.01.54 fault code from the TRANS2 module. Test drive the tractor to ensure the code does not return.
