Massey Ferguson 04.01.58 – Transmission Control Unit (TRANS): Possible Transmission Slippage Detected

Issue description

The transmission slip monitor has detected that the transmission output speed deviates from the setpoint by more than 30%. The system triggers this code when the "ideal ratio" versus "actual ratio" comparison falls outside acceptable limits.

Check the cause

  1. Check operating temperature, as single occurrences of this code are possible under extremely low temperatures and may not indicate a hard failure

  2. Verify clutch and turbo-clutch status, including the clutch actuator unit and pedal sensors (fault is not active if turbo-clutch is on or pedal is depressed)

  3. Inspect transmission output speed sensors and their wiring harnesses for damage, corrosion, or poor connections

  4. Monitor transmission oil temperature for overheating, which indicates repeated slipping and potential severe damage

Repair steps

  1. Warm-Up and Clear

If the tractor is operating in extreme cold, allow the transmission fluid to reach normal operating temperature. Clear the fault code and test drive the tractor to see if the code returns.

  2. Electrical Inspection

Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission speed sensors. Look for chafed wires or loose connector pins that could cause erratic speed readings.

  3. Sensor Replacement

Remove the transmission speed sensors. Inspect the magnetic tips for excessive metal shavings (which can skew readings). If the sensor is faulty or damaged, replace it with a new OEM speed sensor.

  4. Mechanical Diagnosis

If the sensors and wiring are verified good, the transmission is experiencing actual internal mechanical slippage (e.g., worn clutch packs or hydrostatic drive issues). You will need to perform hydraulic pressure tests on the transmission circuits to isolate the internal leak or worn component before splitting the tractor for a transmission rebuild.
