Massey Ferguson 04.01.61 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / TRANS1 / Autotronic 5: Issue With Range 1 Solenoid Valve
Issue description
The system has detected a circuit malfunction or operational mismatch regarding the Range 1 solenoid (L52). This can be triggered by an open circuit in the solenoid wiring, a short circuit to +12V or 0V (ground), or an inconsistency between the Range 1 switch and the Range 1 solenoid valve state.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the L52 Range 1 solenoid valve on the transmission control valve block, checking the electrical connector and wiring harness for corrosion, backed-out pins, or physical damage.
Using a multimeter, check the wiring between the Autotronic 5 (TRANS1) controller and the L52 solenoid for an open circuit or a short to ground (0V) or power (+12V).
Measure the resistance of the L52 solenoid coil to determine if it has failed internally.
Verify that the Range 1 selector switch in the cab is functioning correctly and sending the proper signal to the controller to rule out a switch/valve state inconsistency.
Repair steps
Park and secure tractor
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
Locate solenoid valve
Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the gearbox housing. Identify the Range 1 solenoid valve (L52).
Disconnect wiring
Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the L52 solenoid.
Remove retaining screws
Remove the retaining screws and flanges securing the solenoid valve to the valve block.
Remove faulty solenoid
Carefully pull the faulty solenoid valve out of the housing.
Lubricate O-rings
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid to prevent pinching.
Install new solenoid
Insert the new solenoid valve into the block, reinstall the flanges, and tighten the retaining screws.
Reconnect wiring
Reconnect the electrical harness connector.
Clear fault code
Clear the stored 04.01.61 fault code from the TRANS1 module using the tractor's diagnostic display or a dealer service tool.
Test transmission
Start the tractor and test the transmission by shifting into Range 1 to ensure smooth engagement and that the code does not return.
